MISSION AND HISTORY
Jill, a native Texan born and raised in Houston, is a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Supervisor, and National Certified Counselor. Jill received her BA in Behavioral Science from Concordia University and her MA in Counseling from St. Edwards University in Austin, TX. Mrs. Wheeler went on to receive advanced clinical training and knowledge in play therapy from Mid American Nazarene University where she obtained a Post Graduate Certificate in Play therapy.
Throughout her career, Jill has gained extensive knowledge and experience working with children and adolescents in a variety of settings that include inpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization programs, and residential treatment. Jill enjoys working with children and adolescents and feels it is an honor and privilege to participate in the lives and growth of each client. Jill was first exposed to attachment and trauma work in graduate school when she studied the work of Peter Levine and Dan Siegel. Jill went on to recieve specialized knowledge and training in attachment focused treatment with adolescents when she worked as an adolescent and family therapist at Change Academy Lake of the Ozarks (CALO) in Lake Ozark, Missouri. CALO is the premiere residential treatment facility for struggling teens with developmental trauma and reactive attachment disorder. While at CALO, Jill was trained and supervised in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy, theraplay, play therapy, sensory integration, co-regulation, adventure therapy, and the use of canines to facilitate transferrable attachment. In May 2015, Jill completed the 9 month Adoption, Attachment, and Trauma Master Class through the Central Texas Attachment and Trauma Center. She is currently working toward her credential as a registered play therapist.
I am skilled and specially trained in working with clients who have experienced relationship-based trauma, such as abuse, neglect, abandonment, adoption, orphanage care, or disruptions in caregivers. In therapy, I utliize education and training in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), Theraplay, Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI), Attachment Focused Family Therapy, Filial Therapy, Child Centered Non-Directive Play Therapy, and several other play therapies. Additionally, I draw heavily from my training, expeirence, and tenure as the Adolescent and Family Therapist at Change Academy Lake of the Ozarks (CALO), the premeire RTC specialzing in relational trauma and the treatment of Reactive Attachment Disorder.
